Saving on your home energy bill – 22 ways

12.30.2009 by Bob 10 comments

I am getting ready to embark on an all out battle against our energy bills and I know the next couple months are going to be tough. It’s been a cold December, but January and February are always a bit more intense. But after doing some homework, I found a bunch of simple things that we can do to lower our bills this winter. Even though I should have done this 2 months ago, I am going to basically treat this as my checklist of things to do to over the next couple weeks…

Netflix vs. Blockbuster Online video rentals

For the last couple weeks I have been thinking about signing up for an online video rental service and yesterday I investigated some options. We probably watch (on average) 4-6 movies a month and in the winter that figure might even be a little higher. We are big Redbox fans and normally take advantage of the $1 new releases they offer. While this is a great option, each rental requires two separate trips to pick up and return the movie. The convenience factor of the online services got me thinking about them…

Google never ceases to amaze me. This little startup is only about a decade old, and yet they have changed the world on a large and dramatic scale. Accessing information online has become so much more accurate than before they hit the scene and the business world has been changed forever as well. And it [...]

Full of Bull | Review

Since I like learning about stock investing, I was very excited to go through Full of Bull in the hopes of learning more about investing. However, after reading the book, I felt that except for a couple of chapters, the book was a bit of a disappointment. Reason? The central idea of the book is that ordinary, individual (retail) investors should be careful about the analyst buy/sell recommendations and not take the Wall Street literally. Despite being a relatively thin book (with 196 pages devoted to the main content), the author keeps repeating this theme throughout the book without going too much into how individual investors can better analyze the stocks…

Becoming debt-free with Dave Ramsey’s plan

12.26.2009 by Guest 9 comments

Recently, I had a conversation at work with a co-worker of mine about getting out of debt. He introduced me to Dave Ramsey. I never heard somebody who made so much sense before when it came to personal finance. I have to say that listening to the audio book “The Total Money Makeover” has literally changed my life. The first time I listened to it, I was just sitting there kicking myself as he was calling out all the stupid financial blunders I’d committed like everyone else out there without even thinking about it…

The attitude behind it really matters. There is a huge difference between buying stuff that you feel (or are) obligated to, and intentionally (and cheerfully) giving something to another person. So if you need a little boost to your giving attitude this year, do a little meditating on the scriptures below…

How to Avoid ‘Work from Home’ Scams

As the Internet becomes a more popular money making product, more and more people are seeking an encome (online income). However, the internet also has an added level of risk because with the internet comes anonymity. Since the internet is not transparent a person can run a scam, close down a site, and then start up the next day again on a new site. As a result, we, the people, must protect ourselves from online business scams…

New credit card legislation coming soon – interest rates rise, limits go down

12.22.2009 by Bob 6 comments

But we all know that racking up Christmas debt is really easy to do. But this year because of the new credit card legislation (starting February 2010) it is particularly a bad idea. Bob Brooks has a couple reasons why it is extra important this year to avoid credit card debt it if at all possible. According to Brooks, consumers who carry their credit card debt over to February of 2010 will be in for a big surprise because of…
