Winter-time, use electric blankets and turn thermostat way down overnight. Close off unused rooms, storage rooms. Fix any air leaks into house with caulking. Fill windows with removable, tight fitting Styrofoam batts made of R-20+ foam cut to size, stored under beds in daytime - we decorate ours for a cheery effect, leave them in the windows on really cold days-and stay cozy and warm on half the fuel all winter long! Keep humidity a proper levels, heat feels warmer in moist air somehow! Cover all windows with a layer of heat shrinkable clear plastic - extra layer makes remarkable change, and cuts droughts from leaking window gaskets. Install plastic liners on all outside wall electric plugs, cuts draught, seals house better. Cover all hot water pipes with foam insulation - gets hotter water faster, but also stops radiating losses from tank.

I like the point about line-drying clothes adding humidity to the home. My husband and I run a humidifier at night in winter. Maybe we should just line-dry all of our clothes!

I've also heard that it helps to periodically wash your lint filter with a little soap, water, and a toothbrush. Sometimes gunk from dryer sheets (if you use them) can keep it from running optimally. But it's hard to see. At least that's one of those cleaning tips I've had passed down.
