Buy Cheap Cell Phones Online: Amazon Wireless

Amazon wireless logo

I have been a Verizon Wireless customer for close to a decade and have always upgraded my cell phones and plans by just going into the local Verizon store. I didn’t realize that you can buy cell phones and plans online – other places than your cell phone company’s website.

Amazon Wireless just recently launched and they offer the option of being able to buy cheap cell phones from them, upgrade or renew your plan, and get free 2-day shipping to boot. They currently offer phones for AT&T, Verizon, and T-Mobile.

If you have been around a while, you probably know that I love Amazon – they are often the best place to look for product reviews from users, they have one of the simplest return policies I have seen online, and they offer free shipping on the products they sell.

From the Amazon Wireless website…

AmazonWireless is a website by Amazon.com that offers cell phones and wireless plans, easy shopping without rebate hassles, and FREE two-day shipping.

AmazonWireless makes it easy for customers to upgrade their phone if they already have a plan, add a line to an existing family plan, or if they want to establish new cell phone service, has tried to make it simple to find the right phone, service plan, and options.

Customers can shop for phones by carrier, phone feature, price, color, and brand. The site’s shopping cart will guide them through each stage of the purchase process, where they’ll find familiar Amazon features like bestseller lists, detailed product descriptions, and customer reviews.

So how much cheaper are the cell phones?

I was curious to see how much cheaper buying a cell phone from Amazon Wireless would be than if I bought it from the Verizon Wireless website (which is often even cheaper than the store).

It turns out that you can save quite a bit of money buying them from Amazon. All of the prices below are as of 9-28-10 for an individual account with a 2yr contract.

My problem has been less with the price of the phones but of the outrageous mandatory requirement to add an expensive DATA plan whether or not you want one. I like phones with touch screens and extra features but don’t use Email, Internet access or WEB surfing but Verizon carriers and others think I need to be protected from the possibility of excess charges when I have blocked activation on my wife and I’s current LG Dare (which, by the way would cost me $10 more per phone if I were adding them now).

    • Fred, I know what you mean – I currently have a data plan, but before this phone a couple years ago I was wanting a similar setup as yourself, and Verizon wouldn’t let me do it #bummer

Check out wirefly.com. I signed up for a 2 yr Verizon contract, and got a Samsung Fascinate for $9.99. Wirefly makes their money by promising good customers to wireless carriers, so if you downgrade your plan or your account is suspended during your contract period, you will be required to pay Wirefly $199 for the phone.

  3. Just this morning I ordered the Droid 2 (Verizon). At the store, my out of pocket was $250 for the upgrade … On amazonwireless.com $39.99!!

  4. I recently purchased a phone and switched carrier with amazon. then i noticed the contract price i signed with amazon for the rate plan is higher than the published rate at the cell company’s website, so the $5 extra a month i pay for the rate plan times 24 month contract is $120. the phone i got that’s $100 cheaper turned out to cost me $20 more.
