Global Giving.org is a great organization for business owners to sow into important causes around the globe. A prominent factor in my giving is knowing that it makes a direct impact immediately and doesn't sit in red-tape or on someone's $1000 a plate gala benefit. GlobalGiving.org is an online marketplace that connects you to the causes and countries you care about. You select the projects you want to support, make a tax-deductible contribution, and get regular progress updates – so you can see your impact. GlobalGiving connects you to over 700 pre-screened grassroots charity projects around the world. It's an efficient, transparent way to make an impact with your giving. I am also urging others to support recovery efforts in Haiti through this organization: http://www.globalgiving.org/haiti-earthquake/

@Cedric
Great point and thanks for pointing us to that excellent Bible verse.
This person you reference is one who I do think is making a wise tax decision, but in the process he is withholding good from those who could really use the money throughout the year.
Thanks for your comment!

You'll get a deduction of at least $500 on your itemized federal tax return when you donate car to charity. Cars4Charities has hundreds of charities for you to choose to donate a car to. The process of car donation is simple, the pickup is free and can be done online at your convenience at http://www.cars4charities.org/ You can donate your car even if it doesn't run.

Excellent article Craig. There is a biblical scriptue to teach us not to withhold our charitable giving until the end of the year:
Proverbs 3:27-28 (NIV) says 27 Do not withhold good from those who deserve it, when it is in your power to act. 28 Do not say to your neighbor, "Come back later; I'll give it tomorrow"— when you now have it with you.

I had a conversation with a fellow Christian who "invests" his tithe money throughout the year and then "gifts" the high returning stock to his church as his tithe. I thought this scripture was relevant.

Thoughts?

Yes, again, I will give even if there is no tax deduction.

I really enjoyed this, especially your outline of the frugal but "not really caring about giving" methods. I hadn't even considered many of them, but they do highlight some important issues. I grew up with my parents working in the ministry, so I've been immersed in this for a while now, both as a giver and as a receiver. This is an excellent resource for me to point people to for an thorough overview. You explained it all much better than I could have in as many words.

Nicely done Craig!

I have been giving for a few years and in those years I just took the standard deduction. Now that I'm going to itemize, this will be the first year I receive any tax deduction for giving. So to answer your question, I will always give, even if there is no tax deduction.
