Financial Freedom Using God’s Plan

Have you ever struggled with the concept of how God works in this world while we still possess freewill to choose? I used to think that finance was all about our choices. Others insisted that only God could bring people to success, so why plan? Today, I’m convinced that both individuals and God play a vital role in successful financial planning.

Perhaps this verse will shed some light on what I’m trying to communicate:

In his heart a man plans his course, but the LORD determines his steps. -Proverbs 16:9 NIV

We plan the way we want to live, but only God makes us able to live it. -Proverbs 16:9 The Message

The union between humanity and God makes everything possible. God works through us to bring glory to himself. God gives us the resources, freewill, and expertise to make our financial household strong.

A Personal Testimony

I am a planner. You know, one of those nerds that love spreadsheets and flowcharts. It took me a long time to learn that personal finance is not all about the numbers. Instead, it is about surrendering finances to God and allowing him to direct us into appropriate financial planning.

I’m also naturally aggressive with money. I sometimes yearn to invest before I ensure all my emergency fund money is in place. This is an area in my life that I had to surrender to God. Maybe you’re the same way. Or, maybe you’re on the other extreme – you hold onto money and don’t allow it to be a blessing in other’s lives.

Wherever you land on the spectrum, keep in mind these two elements of personal finance: Our Planning + God’s Enabling.

Two Elements: Planning and Enabling

Financial success comes in two elements: planning and enabling. We plan, God enables. It is important to recognize the role that both we and God play in this endeavor.

What should we plan? There are several core elements of financial planning that can lead us to financial peace. For example, we should find ways to lower our debt, build savings, and invest wisely.

When does God enable? I’m convinced that when our plans align with God’s will, God will enable us to accomplish those things we set out to do. It might not be in our own timing, but it will happen. The Lord rewards those who faithfully plan and seek his best for their lives.

God Is The Focus

It is always important to keep in mind that God is the focus. Don’t let your financial planning overwhelm your need for God. Recognize that everything good comes from The-One-Who-Made-Us. Whatever you do, don’t allow money-management become your God.

No one can serve two masters. Either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and Money. -Matthew 6:24 NIV

You can’t worship two gods at once. Loving one god, you’ll end up hating the other. Adoration of one feeds contempt for the other. You can’t worship God and Money both. -Matthew 6:24 The Message

Everything begins and ends with God. Money is powerless without the Lord allowing us to use it for his glory.

What This Means For You

Perhaps you’re going through a difficult situation. Maybe you recently lost your job, you have creditors calling you non-stop, or you just can’t seem to communicate with your spouse about money. Whatever your situation, there is hope. Remember to depend on God for help. You can make it if you take strength in the fact that God loves you so much than you can imagine.

Very well written. I have had this conversation several times with old college friends. The idea that we need to take human steps but with the faith that God will be directing them for His plan. It is hard to truly live that way at times. Thank you for your reminder here. We can all use the accountability!

Excellent post! I have finally broke myself from the whole belief in keeping up with my family and friends. Now I’m just adhering to what God is saying in all aspects of my life. this is a wonderful article and i will use and pass this insight along.

God Bless!

Thanks for the great article. Once we get out of the way, it allows God to do his thing (after we exhibit our faith by acting with him directing our steps).

Great article! With all of our planning, it is easy to sometimes neglect to fully trust in God for direction and guiding. Thanks for the reminder!
