The 23 Psalm is probably one of the most popular scriptures of all, and chances are you’ve heard it. However, I wanted to offer you my insight of this Psalm. Before I do, here is that scripture:
Psa 23:1 A Psalm of David. The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want.
Psa 23:2 He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters.
Psa 23:3 He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake.
Psa 23:4 Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.
Psa 23:5 Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over.
Psa 23:6 Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the LORD for ever.
Me, Myself, and I
Where I’m going with this is straightforward and probably obvious if you look carefully at that passage. Do you notice the theme of that Psalm? It seems to be all about ‘I’: I, me, my. There are times when we are all alone and the people and things we’ve confided in are not there. They may be physically there, but they may not have the capability or desire to help or deliver us. Nonetheless, God becomes our source of comfort in those circumstances.
God requires us to need Him for our very survival (See Matthew 6:25-34). The rain, food, shelter, strength, wisdom, power, deliverance, protection, comfort, peace, and everything else we have are provided by Him. Be comforted in knowing that even if it seems like you’re alone, God is still there. And He is keenly aware of everything you’re going through.
Be blessed and encouraged,
David
