How to get free shipping

by Bob on November 1, 2009

If you hate the unpleasant surprise of finding out how much shipping adds to your online shopping order, here are a few suggestions…

FreeShipping.org

This website has all the major stores listed and has coupon and promotion codes that will allow you to get free shipping on your purchase.

Amazon Prime

I have been using Amazon Prime for the last couple years and I love it. Basically you pay $80 a year to Amazon.com in exchange for Free 2-Day shipping on any item that they ship. I buy a whole lot of stuff from Amazon and so it is an easy decision for me. If you are not an avid online shopper it might not be worth it, but it is something worth considering.

Local Store pickup

Many brick-and-mortar retailers offer free shipping if you are willing to pick it up in the store. Walmart, Payless Shoes, REI, and Staples are a just a few of many that offer this service.

Do you have any tips for getting free shipping?

Great tips. Paying shipping fees bothers me for some reason. I’ve been known to buy one or two more items just to have a large enough purchase to get the free shipping (but only when the difference isn’t too much). You can sometimes come out ahead by doing that if you would have to pay $7 for shipping, but can make a $5 purchase to get over the limit for free shipping. It’s like a coupon. :)

I, too, have taken part in Amazon Prime over the last few years. I love it as I tend to buy a lot of stuff online as well. Just be aware that the free shipping only counts on items sold by Amazon and not for those sold by third parties. This means that used textbooks still don’t come for free.

Thanks for providing great tips on how to save on shipping. Some online stores charge an arm and a leg just to ship their goods to you. So sometimes I feel reluctant shopping at these stores because of their high shipping fees. I do like the stores that offer you free shipping incentive when you order a certain $ amount.
