Struggles are only means for victory. Children nowadays mostly have the entitlement mentality that is not good because they are juts becoming dependent on their givers and not wanting to work to be independent. So, advice for those parents that they must try to teach their kids how to earn money so they will be in good terms financially.

Parents should make their children realize the essence of money management, right from an early age. They should try to make them financially independent by giving them financial responsibility. This may help the children to handle the tough financial issues more effectively.

Very informative post.

Good post.

The only point I wanted to make about fewer teenagers having jobs these days is that, at least in my area (southeast Michigan) local youths are encouraged / expected to do community service. This might happen through class, their clubs, confirmation class, their youth group, etc.

As a result, there really isn't a lot of available time for many youths to work at a part-time job.

The community service does look good on college applications and scholarship applications, so there are some long-term benefits.

Now ... we also have economic realities at work in Michigan but that's a different topic.

Great post! We as parents are responsible for instilling work habits in our children. We must give them jobs to earn money. Handouts will do nothing but cripple them.
Good stuff!

Good post and I couldn't agree more. It's amazing how many material items kids have nowadays, e.g. cell phones, DS's, iPods, etc...

We started our kids early on an allowance and the 10/10/10/70 system to get them used to saving money and giving to charity. We'll see how that goes as they get older (currently 7 and 9 years old).

I have a few posts about this back at my blog if anyone is interested and good luck!

As a kid I had a weekly allowance that helped me learn how to save for what I want and budget. I also had household chores and errands I needed to do. I think giving a little bit and explaining a long the way can help kids as they grow.

Good post. My husband and I talk a lot about what things we plan to provide for our daughter and how we'll teach her to handle money (she's 3). It's definitely a tough spot. Most teenagers walk around with their own cell phone, designer jeans and NO job. Weird. How am I going to raise a responsible child with strong values in this society?
