Money, Purpose, Joy by Matt Bellmoney purpose joy matt bell.jpg

Matt Bell donated a copy of Money, Purpose, Joy for the giveaway this week. I have not yet read it myself, but from skimming it I am excited to start reading it. The book approaches personal finance and how we manage our money from a Biblical perspective and I always appreciate that.

Here is a review that I found of the book…

Rarely do you read a personal finance book that says one of the main problems with our finances (and, undoubtedly, there are many for the average American!) is that we haven’t stretched far enough. No, Matt Bell isn’t encouraging the reader to extend that line of credit just a bit further or to take advantage of that “great” new credit card offer, rather Bell writes that we’ve been fed a lie and believed it wholeheartedly. Culture would have us believe that we’re consumers – wasters, really – and that we’re fulfilling our economic obligations when we buy, buy, buy.

In “Money, Purpose, Joy”, Bell offers a different challenge: to be builders, not consumers. Instead of fruitlessly throwing money after the latest craze, we should build into the relationships that matter most – starting with God. Bell writes that we need to flip our money usage from: Buy, Save, then Give – to Give, Save, then Buy. This allows us to invest/build into things of significance – these are the things that we should be stretching for.

Though there are a number of personal finance books to be found, this one stands apart. Read it and be challenged.

As a personal friend of Matt Bell, I highly recommend this book. Matt and I talked last Friday about the goal of this book. Matt wants to appeal to not only the Christian community but also non-believers. When you hear or read about Matt’s passion for educating the public about how to find more joy in your financial life, it all leads back to Christ. Without purpose for your money, there is no joy!

The best part of the book are the lessons Matt talks about in Money, Purpose, Joy. He has made all the classic mistakes with money (getting into debt, spending more than he made)but he came out on top (saving enough money to pursue his dream job – speaking and writing). He is not ashamed to share his mistakes and expose his faith to the world. This is a great- must read book. Even if you don’t win one, go buy his book, It will help you find more purpose and joy.

Jay – you make a good point that he is not ashamed to share his mistakes and expose his faith to the world. I was in the same boat and I am starting to see the light at the end of the tunnel and have become free of being ashamed of my financial situation. I realize that I am finding my passion by helping others to get out of a financial mess or prevent others from doing the same.

So far the reviews on Amazon.com are excellent and I hope to read the book soon.
