A Step-By-Step Guide To Managing Your Money From A Biblical Perspective

I recently finished reading Austin Pryor’s Sound Mind Investing Handbook. I am in the process of writing a more elaborate review, but for the giveaway post, I will try to keep it short. Basically, the SMI Handbook is a very thorough and comprehensive guide to managing your money Biblically. It is essentially a textbook that walks the reader through each step of managing his/her money chapter by chapter.

It’s size and scope can appear to be more intimidating than it is – it actually is written in layman’s terms and is very easy for anyone to understand. It covers everything from simple tips about handling your money to more complex investment topics. Scriptural references can be seen throughout the entire book.

I think it is a great resource that every Christian should have on his or her shelf. It currently has a 5-star rating on Amazon (from 18 reviews) – so apparently I am not the only one who feels that way!

As a financial professional, I have always admired the folks at soundmindinvesting.com. Austin Prior does a great job at bringing a biblical approach to finances. This is a great intro to investing book for beginners and yet still has much to offer seasoned investors.

Where this book misses the mark is failing to look at the moral responsibilty when we as Christians invest. Handing your money over to mutual funds and money managers who do not share your values is a problem for many. Can we truly expect God to bless investments in companies that oppose His Word? Though no company is perfect, there clearly are good and bad choices when it comes to selecting your investments.

As Stewards of God’s money we should seek to find companies advancing His kingdom and those helping to advance mandkind and avoid those involved in immoral business practices and those clearly opposing the principles of Our Lord.

Until now, there has only been one investment newsletter dedicated to investing written from a Christian perspective. Starting next month, we will be launching http://www.faithbasedinvestor.com as a resource to help Christian investors incorporate their morals, values, and faith into their investment portfolios.

Many Blessings,

Jay,

Thanks for the kind words about the book. Actually, it does look at the moral responsibilities of the investor in Chapter 28. However, our take on the subject is different than those who subscribe to the typical viewpoint of Socially Responsible Investing (SRI). To learn more about our view on the subject, please read: http://www.soundmindinvesting.com/visitor/archives/2001/oct/feature.htm

All the best,
