This post highlights well the importance of expense tracking. Another great benefit is the communication generated between husband and wife when looking at the expense tracking form or software together. It's not uncommon for one spouse to be in the dark when it comes to budget category balances, such as food/groceries.
Expenses tracking is a great way for all family members to know the status of the family budget for any given point in time during the month.

Gas purchases , wife and I are cash only but we fudge and use our debit card for gas. I track my gas thru check register to see how we do according to budget each month.

If your friend doesnt want to track daily have him set aside some blow money (walk around money) each week. Using the envelope system that Dave Ramsey suggests has made life easier for us and less tedious. For cash, gas should be in a seperate envelope than walk about $$$.

Can I suggest a much easier approach?

When you make cash purchases, get a receipt! Put the receipts in the same area of your wallet as your cash. All of the data mentioned in the article (date, amount, item purchased) are tracked on receipts. This effort takes absolutely no time and costs no money. All that's required is to take the receipt and put it in your wallet instead of in the purchase bag. Another benefit: less likelihood of misplacing receipts.

Need to be organized although even with tracking out of pocket expenses, depending on the person will determine how specific they want to track. Using an online personal budgeting software can also help you track out of pocket expenses. Although there are many, I recommend and use BudgetPulse.com (Full Disclosure: I am the marketing director but could offer alternatives if you would like).

Either way, having a plan and sticking to it will help you budget.
