Try something new

When is the last time you tried something for the first time?

God put me on this earth and I have the strongest desire to squeeze every ounce of life I can out of these 100 years or so I get to be down here. If you are bored, try something new!

There is so much in this world to be discovered. There are so many things to learn about, skills to develop, places to see, people to talk to, hobbies to enjoy, etc…  I want to do it all!

I don’t remember where I heard this, but I just recently heard a quote something along the lines of:

“They should just tell us all that we are dying when we are born, so that we actually live our lives.”

A friend of mine is a cancer survivor and you can tell within 2 minutes of talking to him that he doesn’t take a single breath for granted. He is so excited and passionate about life and living and he enjoys everything he does.

I want to be more like him.

It shouldn’t take a near-death experience to get us to understand the brevity of life. It’s short. We all know it is, let’s take advantage of everything that God has for us.

** drop your bible, read some truth for a change **

Here are some books which I’ve found very useful . . . you can buy used copies, probably find them in a decent undergraduate library.

Basically, appreciate that xianity is merely another religion which had a beginning, a middle, and will have an end. There’s nothing special about it — and it deserves attention only because of its cruel domination of the Western mind for 1,000 years.

Wilken, R. The christians as the romans saw them. Yale. 1984.
Looks at the roman intellectual and governmental reaction to the rise and spread of xianity. Period from roughly 100-400 CE. Provocative concluding chapter on xianity as a “jewish heresy.”

Celsus. The true doctrine. (trans/intro RJ Hoffman) Oxford. 1987.
Translation of the greek original published perhaps at the request of Roman emperor Marcus Aurelius, about 180 CE. Presents many arguments against xian beliefs and practices. A “pagan” intellectual’s condemnation of an upstart religion. One he considers “atheistic” and unpatriotic. Quite amusing in some places. And, from our xian-ridden perspective, highly ironic.

Onfray. M. Atheist Manifesto: The Case Against Christianity, Judaism, and Islam
2006. Recent translation of Onfray’s French text. Basically, a work in history and historiography. Good sections on Jesus as a fictional character and on fundamentalism, especially within Islam. Deserves to be better known.

Look up these volumes at amazon.com and you’ll find lots of others.

You can start living your life by living for yourself, not for someone or something that isn’t tangible or, for that matter real. Your god gave your friend cancer that science helped him beat. If it wouldn’t have worked what would have been God’s purpose in that?

@bipolar
I appreciate you stopping by, but I don’t need any convincing. There are lots of books from lots of smarter minds than I, but bottom line I have seen first hand God at work in my life. There is no way I could NOT believe based on the things that have happened in my life.

@Deus
God didn’t give Him cancer. If you read the gospels you will see that a huge chunk of Jesus’ time was spent healing people (not making them sick). So if He did make people sick, then heal them that would kind of be like digging a hole and filling it back up again. Seems like a waste of time to me…
