And it all started with just a cheap laptop, and over the last 8 years I have honed in on some favorite tools to help me speed up the process.

But if we are being honest, you don’t need ANY of this stuff to be successful as a blogger, but it can help you step up your game a bit and enjoy the work a bit more.

Blogging Gear Breakdown: Everything you DON'T need to be a Pro-Blogger

A look at each item:

Shure SM7B

Shure SM7B

The SM7B dynamic microphone has a smooth, flat, wide-range frequency response in all professional audio applications.  The best mic I have ever owned by far.

Rode PSA1 Swivel Boom Arm

Rode PSA1 Swivel Boom Arm

Keep the mic at a comfortable level for speaking or singing while leaving hands free! Pricey for a boom arm, but considerably better than my old one (down below).

Amazon Echo Dot

Echo Dot

A hands-free, voice-controlled device that uses Alexa to play music, control smart home devices, provide information, read the news, set alarms, and more.  Not a necessity by any means, but I love it.

Focusrite Scarlett Solo

Focusrite Scarlet Solo

I recommend this as they no longer make Tascam US100 which essentially is how I get my mic audio into the mac mini.

 Apple Mac Mini

Apple Mac Mini

Great machine and plenty powerful for all the apps that I use on a daily basis.

Western Digital External Hard drive

Western Digital External Hard Drive

This is my external HD that I use.  It gets the job done.

Halter Dual Monitor Stand

Halter Dual Monitor Stand

I LOVE having 2 monitors.  And this is what makes it all possible while allowing me the flexibility to move them around.

Asus 24" Monitors

Asus 24” Monitors

Cheap and have been very reliable.

Logitech HD Pro Webcam C920, Widescreen Video Calling and Recording, 1080p Camera, Desktop or Laptop Webcam

Logitech c920 Webcam

Pretty much the best webcam out there.  Highly recommended.

Pyle PMKSH01 Suspension Boom Scissor Microphone Stand/Studio Radio Shock Mount Mic Holder, Adjustable/Extendable

Pyle PMKSH01 Boom Microphone Stand

My old boom arm that now holds the webcam listed above.  Not bad at all for the price.

CAMVATE Thread Adapter Microphone Stand 5/8"-27 Female to 1/4"-20 Male for Camera Monitor

Mic Thread Adapter to Camera Mount

Studs needed for mounting cameras, recorders and other accessories onto microphone stands.

Fun little drawer for under the desk.

Retro 1951 Tornado Pen

One of my favorite pens.

Gunnar Optiks Full Rim Ergonomic Advanced Computer Glasses with Headset Compatibility and Amber Lens Tint

Gunnar Computer Glasses

Specially designed lenses featuring proprietary tints and coatings that block high-energy blue light, UV and glare.

Top by Ergodriven

Topo Ergodriven Standing Mat

If you stand at your desk, you NEED a good mat.  This is the best one I have found so far.  You’ll sit less and stand comfortably because it inspires active and varied stances!

Microsoft Natural Ergonomic Keyboard

Microsoft Ergonomic Keyboard

An oldie, but my favorite keyboard that I have ever used.

Razer DeathAdder Elite Ergonomic Gaming Mouse

Razer DeathAdder

Great high-DPI mouse for very precise movements.

Stand Up Desk Store 60" Crank sit-stand desk

Crank Sit-Stand Desk

My old desk that is about to be sold on Craigslist, it is really nice, I just got tired of the crank to raise/lower it.

Herman Miller Aeron Chair

Herman Miller Aeron

Stupid expensive, but a great chair.  Definitely buy used if you can.  I think I got mine for 70% off the retail price on Craigslist.

Leather Bag by EpicLinen

My Leather Bag

All-purpose lightweight soft vintage leather briefcase that has everything I need in a work bag.

Apple MacBook Air

Macbook Air

Not my fav, but it gets the job done.

I love this thing.

Fisher Space Bullet Pen

Fisher Space Pen

Writes at any angle, even in Zero Gravity. 😉

Canon EOS Rebel T3i DSLR Camera

Canon T3i DSLR Camera

My old DSLR that has been good to me.  Ready to upgrade this year, but the T3i has been a great camera.

I just want to say thank you for sharing! I just started blogging last month and this post helps tremendously. I’m not rushing out to by the full set but it helped me get some ideas of what I’ll need in the future. Do you have any more advice for bloggers who have just gotten started?

    • Lauren (SeedTime Editor)

      Glad to hear that, Donnie!

    • Bob

Donnie, focus on creating great content, but spend more time on the promotion of that great content. Too many bloggers only want to write and that just doesn’t cut it anymore unfortunately!

  2. Joe Conroy

Which boom mic holder do you use with the SM7B dynamic microphone?

    • Bob

Hey Joe, it is a Rode – the model name is listed up above in the list –

    • Joseph P Conroy

      Thanks Bob! Happy New Year!

    • Bob

      You too!

    Hey Bob,

As a blogger myself, I’m always interested in seeing what gears other bloggers use.

As someone who spends a good 10-12 hours a day in front of the computer (and other screens,) I can vouch for the importance of having a good home office with gears that make your life easier, especially when it comes to your health.

I have pretty much everything covered. The only thing I haven’t been able to fix is constant headaches from staring at the screen all day long, I use f.lux app and it helps, but not that much.

I am going to try the glasses you mentioned. Hopefully, it can help with the headaches.

Thanks and have a great 2017 ahead.

    • Bob

Saeed, f.lux is really cool – I used that for a while and really liked it!

  4. Ricardo

    Thanks Bob!
    Great post.
    Happy new year!

    • Bob

      Thanks Ricardo!

Amazing gear. I just started. I read “How to Make Money Blogging,” and began. 3 posts. Basic. Excited about the future possibilities. Thank you for the help, the great insight and “mentoring.” I am looking forward to seeing the webinar I am signed up for on Monday as well.

    • Lauren (SeedTime Editor)

      That’s great, Rick – thanks!

Hi Bob – I just wanted to write a quick note to thank you for the free ebook ‘How to Make Money Blogging’. I started my blog lovemusicsing.com in mid-December and the technical information about how to set up the site, as well as the supporting information about monetizing the blog has been invaluable.

    • Bob

Awesome – love hearing that Michelle!
