Money doesn’t solve money problems

08.30.2007 by Bob 12 comments

I mean if you were making what your boss is making, it will not fix your financial squeeze. There is a famous principle that expenses rise to meet income, so if you are having a hard time paying your bills or making a dent in your mountain of debt money is NOT your answer.

A simple act

08.28.2007 by Bob 9 comments

I was driving home from work yesterday and I saw a man begging on the off ramp by my house. As I drove past I had this strong compulsion to go take him out to lunch and talk to the guy. This was about the last thing in the world that I WANTED to do.

Should you give to beggars?

08.23.2007 by Bob 89 comments

Obviously, the Bible makes it very clear that we are to give to the poor. There are countless verses to support this. But, it also says in 2 Thessalonians 3:10, “For even when we were with you, we used to give you this order: if anyone is not willing to work, then he is not to eat, either.”

How to save money for retirement

08.21.2007 by Bob 3 comments

The biggest hurdle for most people is saving money. As Dave Ramsey would say, it is a behavioral problem, not a money problem. Getting in the habit of consistently saving is far more crucial to your success than getting a better rate of return (at the beginning). Let me show you why:

Find the cheapest gas in town

08.14.2007 by Bob 0 comments

I know that many people DO care about this and maybe more on a psychological level rather than a financial one. They just FEEL a bit better knowing that they got the best price, regardless of how many pennies they actually saved.
So, in either case, Gasbuddy.com allows you to drop in your zip code and it will show the cheapest gas prices around.

Are you doing what you were called to do?

08.13.2007 by Bob 7 comments

The challenge that comes into play is that most of our society is led by money rather than their calling. Most people just always go after whatever job they can get right now that pays more money than they currently make. I admire the ones who turn down job opportunites because they realize that having a job they enjoy is worth more than a higher paycheck.

Transcribe your thoughts with Jott

08.12.2007 by Bob 3 comments

I like it because I often get ideas while I am driving and have no SAFE means of getting them down on paper (believe me, writing while driving is far more dangerous than talking on your cell phone). This process is very simple if you put the number in your one-touch speed dial on your phone.

Barry Bonds, homeruns, and taxes

08.09.2007 by Bob 6 comments

This brings up an interesting issue regarding taxes. According to some tax professionals as soon as Matt caught the ball it became income to him based on a fair estimate of the value of the ball. The ball is estimated to be worth over a half a million dollars. In the top tax bracket this could be a tax bill of over $150,000 for Matt.

He fed four thousand, He will feed you

08.08.2007 by Bob 0 comments

At the beginning of Mark 8, Jesus performs this awesome miracle of taking seven loaves and feeding four thousand people with it. The disciples were with Him the whole time. They witnessed this and experienced it. They ate the fish and bread that was miraculously duplicated.

AHM went bankrupt, is Homebanc next?

08.07.2007 by Bob 0 comments

Due largely to the lending frenzy of the recent real estate boom, many mortgage companies are feeling the squeeze. American Home Mortgage (AHM) recently filed for bankruptcy due to “extraordinary disruptions” in the markets that support the mortgage industry. A slow housing market and many payment defaults scared investors away from mortgage debt, including bonds and other securities backed by home loans.

Expenses rise to meet income

08.06.2007 by Bob 1 comment

Expenses rise to meet income. This is the gist of Parkinson’s law. This is the reason that a couple months after most people get a raise, it feels just as tight financially as it did before the raise.
