5 Bible Verses about Money Every Christian Should Know

Let me start by saying that it was difficult to create this list.

Think about it, I am trying to pick the best verses from the Bible about a particular topic.

5 Bible verses about money we all should memorize...These are the 5 verses that, even as I just scratch the surface of understanding them, have revolutionized my financial life. Each one of them has had a strong impact on many decisions in my life. I hope you allow them to impact you as well....Are there really best verses, or are there just those that have impacted us more than others?

I tend to think the latter.

So, this list is just that. These are the 5 verses that, even as I just scratch the surface of understanding them, have revolutionized my financial life.

Each one of them has had a strong impact on many decisions in my life.

I hope you allow them to impact you as well.

5 bible verses about money

1Philippians 4:19

And my God will meet all your needs according to his glorious riches in Christ Jesus.

my God will supply all your needs

If you have lived much life at all, you are probably well aware that putting your trust in the economy, your employer, or your bank account is not a good idea. They are all fair-weather friends. They all can be helping you greatly one minute, and then the next everything has changed.

God, however, is always faithful. That is why we should always be trusting Him as our supply! It doesn’t matter if there is a financial crisis, if you get laid off, or your 401k loses 37% – God will still supply your needs. Just like He promised.

2Malachi 3:10

“Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. Test me in this,” says the LORD Almighty, “and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that you will not have room enough for it.”

bring the whole tithe into the storehouse

It is a bold step of faith to start tithing. Cynics sometimes argue that tithing is not required in the New Testament. I actually agree, since our salvation is no longer based on works, but on faith in Jesus. But to be quite honest, as New Testament believers, 10% should just be a mile-marker on our giving journey. After all, God owns it all and no matter where we are as far as what we are giving, we should always be striving to give more. From my own personal tithing experience, I found that stepping out in Faith in this area and testing Him proved to be quite fruitful and yielded a pretty amazing testimony.

31 Timothy 6:10

For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs.

the love of money is a root of all evil

This verse is so often misquoted that it is almost laughable. Money is not evil. The love of it is. Having a million in your bank account doesn’t mean that you love it. Having $5 in your account doesn’t prove that you don’t.

For example, Warren Buffett has billions in his accounts, but he is giving almost all of it away to benefit the lives of others. On the other hand, I have heard stories of people getting killed over a matter of $20. It is a matter of the heart that only God can judge.

4Acts 20:35

In everything I did, I showed you that by this kind of hard work we must help the weak, remembering the words the Lord Jesus himself said: ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’

more blessed to give than to receive

Giving sets us free, while hoarding entraps us (James 5:2). Giving changes the lives of others (John 3:16). Giving brings blessing back to us (Luke 6:38). Giving allows us to store up treasures in Heaven rather than here on the earth (Matthew 19:21). Giving really is fun – we need to be in on it.

5Proverbs 22:7

The rich rule over the poor, and the borrower is servant to the lender.

borrower is slave to the lender

The freedom of being debt free has always been so incredibly enticing to me that I have been willing to give up a whole lot in exchange for it. The last 3+ years, my wife and I have been diligently chopping away at it, passing up opportunities to spend as frivolously as some of our peers have done. Getting out of debt is not easy and often requires a fight, but the freedom that comes with it is so worth it.

These 5 verses cover our part and God’s part for realising the financial blessings that God has already stored up for us. They sum it all up for me: I do my part and give God the opportunity to proof Himself as He promised.

Hi thanks I really appreciate this post.I do believe its good to give and I”m thankful for God’s Blessings. Keep up the good work.

  23. Ginger

Came across this while I was searching for something else… thank you for reminding us of these principles. I am so tired of hearing “Christians” say that God wants us to be rich! God wants us to be blessed, but that doesn’t necessarily have anything to do with money! When we can trust God to provide and use what we have to help others, that’s when we’ll be happy.

  24. A.B

Hey, thanks alot for these verses, I really appreciate them.
Especially the verse regarding that its more blessed to give than to receive.
These verses constantly remind us not to put our money Before God and reminds us to be generous. Thanks and God bless, keep up the good work!

  25. Will

Nice. I appreciate this post. I’m in debt big time, and I’m working on getting out of it, and never going back. I’m convinced it was sin. Anyways, you said something about “we no longer have to work for our salvation, it’s through faith now”. It’s always been through faith, even in the OT. Just throwing that out there. Anyways, good read, and thanks.

  26. Myrlande

Hello I appreciate this message, the funny thing is I was looking up scriptures that could relate to me and I remembered that in church the pastor will always make us recite Malichi 3:10 and I was not sure where to find it in the bible so i just started typing blessings so big you wont have enough room to recieve it and I stumbled onto your article not only did I find the scripture that I was looking for but I found 4 more. Thank God for you and may God bless you and your family.

  27. Fram

    God bless you!
Just one comment about Malachi 3:10. When God spoke this to our Jewish people through Malachi – they were in a terribly backslidden condition. God even had to make a bargain with the Jews and tell them that if they would tithe, He would give them rain from heaven and bless the land physically. But we don’t have to bargain with God today, because the Bible says in Ephesians 1:3 that “we are blessed with all spiritual blessings in Christ Jesus.”

18 The old rule is done away with. It was weak and useless. 19 The law didn’t make anything perfect. Now a better hope has been given to us. That hope brings us near to God. Heb. 7:18-19

In the new covenant we are not to test God, but to trust God. We now live by grace not by law.
The doctrine of “tithe” in the Christian life generates a sense of fulfilling an obligation, a commandment (law), creating an expectation of return. It prevents him from developing a true Agape to give, thereby limiting the flow of generosity in its whole.
Before 10% belonged to God. Now however 100% belongs to God.

  28. Tashia

BOB!!! It is two years later and your words are still empacting lives of those who are fortunate to read it. I googled lessons on finances because I am in so much debt I can’t even tithe. It’s killing me inside and I am so ashamed! My prayer is to clear up enough debt so that I can.

  29. Dave R.

Great post.. not to early, not to late, right on time.

  30. Mike

Thanks for your words brother. I will share them as I attempted to collect a love offering from my church for our pastoral family.

    God’s love

  31. jessie

wow, i am so encouraged by these verses and it is inspiring to see your works. i pray that God continues to use you and that a lot more people get inspired by these verses

  32. rache

great is our God & awesome in his words……loveu Lord,,thanks for posting…

  33. Crystal

Interestingly, Warren Buffett is an atheist.

  34. Jenessa

In today’s society, everything is all about money, money, money. People like myself tend to forget what life is really about, and sadly some people don’t even have an idea. Reading this was a reminder to me of what is truly important. I’m only 18 and all I do is worry about my future and worry that I won’t make it. Now not only do I feel less stressed about my future financially, but I am also reminded to thank God for everything I have and to continue helping those that need it, whether they are more or less fortunate than I am. Giving is such a wonderful gift. Thank you for this post.

I actually came across this website because I wanted to watch the Charlie Brown Christmas, and it brought me straight to this website. So coming to this website to watch it was quite the blessing, as well as reading something that I really needed to read! So thank you, & God bless!

  35. Brother in Christ

“Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal:
But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal:
For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.”

    Matthew 6:19-21

God bless you all, for you are all appear to be continuing on the righteous path to Him.

  36. Pastor Festus

Wonderful tips.Holiness alone may not bring wealth but following these divine principles no doubt, will.

  37. Wella

I came upon some money the other day, it was an unexpected bonus and I didn’t quite what to do with is. Since it is not part of my wages, I didn’t know if i should tithe with it. And since I do have a lot of bills to pay, I was kinda thinking that maybe I should just give 10% of what’s left after I pay my bills. But after reading your tips, God clearly spoke to me “Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse..” I felt embarrassed for a moment but relieved also that at least I can do something about it. Thanks for the helpful tips. God has blessed me tremendously in so many ways. A small amount of money should not matter.

  38. LM

    “Acts 20:35”
“In everything I did, I showed you that by this kind of hard work we must help the weak, remembering the words the Lord Jesus himself said: ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’”

There are times to think past “money” when we look at these verses. There is a wealth of knowledge to share with the weak. If that were not so, this article would not have touched so many people.

I believe God uses people to say what even the Church no longer preaches in their concern to be loving and compassionate. The truth. Which, sometimes is harsh, hurts or hits the bullseye no matter how loving it is said.

Having the courage and conviction to write these things, to apply wit to them and truth in just the right amount mixed with non-judgement, I believe is a gift from the Holy Spirit.

    Well done.

  39. Chakischa

This was such an inspiring post! I have also learned that faith in God delivers us from financial burden even when it is looking pretty foggy at the end of the tunnel. Just hold on and He will clear the way. Thanks! You have motivated me even more to become debt free.

  40. RL Anderson

I’m in the military and with the money crisis we are facing as government employees it has made really view my spending and that of the young soldiers out there. I was googling through some sites for budget spreadsheets and came across your site. I absolutely love the information and that it is based biblically and that it’s a want. A personal want…to be financial stable and debt free. The bible has the answers and always will. Thank you.

    Forgive my grammar . . .

  41. Jane Hinrichs

Fabulous, fabulous words and teaching. I agree wholeheartedly. I also applaud your candor in saying the NT doesn’t demand tithing but it is a good thing to do that helps us be free, gives God the opportunity to bless us, etc. Giving is so much fun. Giving tells God that Yes, i know you are in control and yes I know You are the Great Provider. I don’t need to figure it all out for God has the plan. I don’t think we can give too much. Oh Boy, God is so good and the best provider ever!

  42. Helen

Thanks – an oasis of comfort in a desert of despair!

  43. J'nia

Thank you soo muchh Bob. this was very enlightning . this was very inspirational in my time of financial deficit. ive recently been yearning for a job becuase i thought money made the world go round. but i recently figured out by a bible verse that “TRUE WEALTH IS THE WEALTH IN CHRIST.” indeed lesson learned.

  44. ravenhairedmaid

Friendly reminder: Giving our OWN stuff away to the poor is honorable. However, what the bible DOESN’T say is, “hire politicians to take your neighbor’s money & property away and give it to someone else.
Jesus helped the poor through His church, not through Caesar.

  45. Joy

Very nice! I love it I also shared it in my blog. God Bless :)

  46. juliet

i find these verses very helpful in my christian walk. I believe if christians base their giving on faith then indeed windows will be opened. Thank you very much Bob and God bless you for the knowledge you shared.

  47. Riya

I really love this verse ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’ Seriously the joy and completeness you recieve when you give is the ultimate peace and blessing from GOD.

  48. Nick Graff

Awesome information. I just had a revelation: I recently took a small loan and after much financial struggle the last few years, we have not taken any loans. Since the loan, I have had some bad news on another topic financially, and it didn’t make sense. I prayed about it and I believe the Lord revealed to me that he was dissapointed that i took a loan after working so hard to train me not to take any loans the last few years.

  49. Ed

This definitely helps with personal finances. I wonder if this is also applicable to our government’s debt crisis. Why our country is in such deep financial trouble? Is it excessive love for money? How does the national debt got so big and how to begin paying it down? Should govt tax more (tithe?) and give out more money in programs and subsidies, or should govt not receive, let people keep and give directly by cutting taxes. Or it is purely politics, where money is the root of all evils and power. God bless and thanks for the post.

  50. Sherita Cotten

I have been struggling financially for 2 years since I lost my job. Family and friends have been truly a blessing to me during my barren season. Often, I have felt like I was on a lost island. Many of these scriptures have help me tremendously. Pray for me that God gives me a financial blessing this Christmas season so I can be a blessing to others who are far more worse off than myself. Keep the encouragement coming. Bless you and yours.

  51. Rhonda

Thanks for the post. This morning I was praying about a verse that would help me in the new year be a better steward. Your web site was the first thing that came up and the five verses and commentary resonated in my heart. Printed off two sets of them. One for my husband who liked them as well and one for me. Thank you for your ministry!

  52. Zoe

Deut 8:18 ALWAYS REMEMBER that is is the Lord your God who gives you power to become rich, and He does it to fulfill the covenant He made with your ancestors…
Deut 28:8 The lord will bless EVERYTHING you do and will full your storehouses with grain. The Lord your God will bless you in the land he is giving you.

  53. Guest

Romans 4:2 For if Abraham was justified by works, he has something to boast about, but not before God.
Tithing may not necessarily open the door of blessings. Even pagan religions believe in tithing. God opens the door of eternal life and blessings to those who have placed their faith in Jesus as their Lord & Savior. Jesus is our grace period!

  54. dennis asiedu III

Indeed it is true tithing may be old testament but still it carries amazing blessings with it. And the reason why this is so powerful i discovered later was because Jesus is actually attached to tithe giving! Jesus rose on the Feast of First Fruits(ask any rabbi)! When Abraham met the King Of Salem in Gen 14: 17-20, he took communion and gave “a tithe of all”…and what did Jesus do just before He died. Even Jacob, after He had a dream on the stone…when u read carefully in Gen 28..u will find a picture of Jesus there…at the end of his experience he gave tithe! So with these few examples why cant tithe be relevant today? Dont miss this oppurtunity!

  55. Dr. Willard S. Burke Sr., DM, PhD

Since Jesus Christ is our High Priest forever, we owe Him tithes forever…
    Hebrews 7: 21-28.

  56. Fram

We don’t owe what’s been already paid.
Saying we owe means that Jesus death was not enough.
We must be generous, but not obligated, as we are not under the curse of the law anymore.

  57. Leo

    Great encouragement. Loved it.

I am nineteen years old. I earn about six hundred a month. Everyone always ask me how is that I have money in my bank because I used about 5/6 of my money to help bills and not for myself. My answer to their question is that I give to God and to those who are in need because I have little desires of this world to use of my money that I get. They say it is impossible, but I say it is possible through the blood of the lamb. God bless. Amen.

    • Angeline Martin

May God to continue to bless u exceedingly & abundantly for ur obedience and discipline at such a young age

  58. Terry Hagensee

I am really grateful God sent me to this page, it really gives me joy and hope. My husband and I are Christians and have been struggling in our fianances and your page was very encouraging. This gives us more guidance on what God wants us to do and believe. I will be passing your page onto other family and friends dealing with the same issues. Thank you so much and may God shower you and your family with his blessings and with his love, wisdom, and peace.

  59. Twinboyz

Because we’re saved by grace and not by the law, having faith in Jesus alone, how can you practice tithing which is an old testament law, as a principle that increases wealth or causes blessings?
It isn’t tithing that causes an increase in wealth or blessing , it’s simply free-will giving of your finances and possessions that causes the increase.

Each man should give what he has decided in his heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. (2 Corithians 9:7)

Many so called pastors and such today, manipulates members of the body of Christ, placing a demand on tithing, rather it be direct or indirect.

  60. Amy

This was a wonderful help to me! Thank you for the information and for all of the hard work that went into it! It is a blessing.

  61. Halina

Wait, what about the following verse from Mark 8:36: “What profit have you if you gain the whole world but lose your soul? And also, what will you give in exchange for your very soul?”

  62. KAREN

Yes, I am a FIRM believer, but not a believer with a twist or one who wants a thing to accommodate my life. I want the truth.

We must remember LAGUAGE and that LANGUAGE and definitions have long changed since “it was written and so it shall be done’ AND we have also altered scriptures over time. In fact, have altered them several times. (as our needs and lives and beliefs were turned towards ourselves).

The word Tithe is NOT the same word as ‘money’ by any stretch NOR is it in its original form. Tithe was originated as a prehistoric Germanic word – ‘tehuntha’, meaning a small portion OF ANYTHING, later because of justification transformed to mean just plain one tenth, of anything. When English hit the scene, the word transformed a few times and ended up as ‘tithe’ and was defined to SPECIFICALLY mean giving up one tenth of ones belongings – not of one’s money and not for the church SPECIFICALLY as a means to be used to pay off taxes. It was NOT until much later when churches decided to apply the word to also include paying the church BECAUSE REMEMBER now…the church back then was indeed the leader of politics (thanks to Rome) and therefore to run, needed to by paid a fee in to do so. No different than the meaning of the word ‘tax’ since it could not run on bread alone. (excuse the pun).

I always say it is important if not urgent, NOT to simply take one sentence from the Bible and make it into something as it stands alone. A phrase standing alone spawns an endless amount of definitive posibilities. NO. We must take ALL preceeding paragraphs and chapters before it and building up to it into account since the Bible is an on-going story in which each and every paragraph / even word, corresponds to the next and leads up to the climax, just as in ANY form of writing. Remember, a scribe is a writer and writers are those with a talent for the written word and in descriptive transposing. Scribes were no different then as they are now. In fact, if we all thought in terms of the Bible being a work of writers, we all may find it easier to understand.

    Let’s see now….

    2 Chronicles 31:10
And Azariah the chief priest, from the house of Zadok, answered him and said, “Since the people began to bring the offerings into the house of the Lord, we have had enough to eat and have plenty left, for the Lord has blessed His people; and what is left is this great abundance.”

Yes, of course they had enough to eat, once the people began to SHARE their blessings with one another. The message, just as Jesus later spends his entire life trying to remind us all, is ABOUT SHARING with each other….NOT about going out and buying 2 cars, wearing all kinds of jewellery, being greedy and selfish – while justifying it (a sin beyond sins) by saying God said we could. The term ‘riches’ does not mean money either. It means ‘spirit’ . To have the spirit of God. God said give one tenth of the FIRST FRUITS of the harvest or of the livestock to him (him meaning the church ) BECAUSE he said the church does all the good works (for free) and therefore if we are to want to remain ‘rich’ in the ‘spirit’ …if we are to remain fulfilled in this way (rich) then sharing just our first harvest will do the trick each season. EACH HARVEST… NOT EVERY DAY OR WEEK. It became every day or week because the church must pay their taxes and without US they cannot do so nor survive. It is the abiltiy of the church to continue that is the blessing here. NOTHING TO DO WITH SALVATION OR SUDDENLY BEING RICH WITH ‘THINGS’. That is a man-made definition to satisfy our greed.

I encourage anyone to read the original masterpiece in its true original (at least its oldest found thus far) form, while having a book on ancient languages at their side to desipher definitions, since as I said, they have altered greatly over time.

Using defintions and thought patterns of our greedy times, does not at all reflect God and certainly not Jesus. I guarantee you will find it very interesting when you do so.

    • John Frainee

I agree with you on the point of reading the Bible within the context of the entire Bible.

JOB 20:15 the devil hath swallowed down riches, and he shall vomit them up again: God shall cast them out of his belly.

  65. Sheena

Great scriptures and putting things into perspective! Good bread!

  66. Bob, great article. I found this while looking for a publication that a friend wrote, and I am glad I did. I frequent this site but had not seen this post. I will be re-posting it on the FiscallySound Facebook page.

    ~ Anthony

  67. Ken

Nice article, Bob! Especially your explanation in Malachi 3:10. The Lord will certainly bless if you’re faithfully giving in church, including the tithe.

  68. Greg

I can’t help noticing how some of the most rapaciously greedy, TV preachers use Malachi 3:10 to guilt folks back under the law and get the money running like a river into their ministries, Joyce Meyers makes around a cool $100 Mil a year and for her it’s just not enough, and she loves to quote Malachi 3:10! That scripture refers to food, not money. If you want to keep any part of the law, you are required to keep the whole box-n-dice!
God doesn’t need your money – period! Your local church needs a few bucks to pay the bills though and you are free to contribute to meeting these expenses as you feel is right for you. The whole idea of switching on a magic bank account by giving a 10th of your gross income (yes – I’ve heard that preached) is utter nonsense and departs from Grace. Christianity becomes the religion of money and rich pastors! Oh, as for Warren Buffet – he’s an agnostic at best, more like an atheist, bad example. Yes, Bill Gates gives oodles of his money away too and he is an atheist as well.

  70. Pastor Wayne

Great article with solid Biblical truth! As I was reading the comments I noticed that back in 2008 this article was a real blessing but there are many comments in the last couple years that tell us how this article is wrong. How can the Word be true three years ago but not any longer? The truth is the Word still works and will work even in tough economic times. Have faith in it and trust God. He will guide you and help you! God Bless!

  71. Carina

Well, to us the unthinkable happened. We’ve hit rock bottom. I was retrenched and my husband was forced to leave his job too since we lost our place of residence and could not afford a home within travelling distance.

I would love for our financial position to improve. One thing I have learnt in this situation is that it is easy for us to say we trust the Lord for provision but… a total different story when the tyre hits the road. We’ve both been without an income for more than 9 months, and yet have had food to eat every single day – proof of his provision..yet.. I’d love to say that based on this I have learnt to trust Him, but I’m not there yet. I still worry whether my family will have enough to eat and to wear each day.

We didn’t have much of an emergency fund so it dried out fast. To make things worse, we were forced to purchase a car just 2 months prior to my lay-off. Our old junk car fell apart, we didn’t have much choice. And to have any chance of an income we cannot afford to lose our only transport now either.

If we knew these principles and lived them before, I’m sure we would’ve invested better, had a stronger emergency fund and probably had some savings to buy a second hand car cash. All this would’ve made the difficult position we are in now slightly less burdensome.

Please pray that our faith will be strengthened in the Provider, so we might too have a chance to manage our finances with wisdom the second time around.

Carina, may God bless and strengthen you in your faith. I myself have been in the middle of such a crisis for an extended time, and I therefore am well aware of the battle that can rage inside. As I type, I am reminded of Peter who did the impossible and walked on water until he took his eyes of the Lord. May you, and I, continue to focus on Jesus alone, the very One whose love cannot be exceeded, the very One who has promised never to leave us, even the One whose return for us is certain.

May you be an encouragement to your family through your visible faith.

      Grace and peace…

I also can attest that tithing brings blessings. God gives us 100% and only asks for 10. Once we understand that it’s all His anyway, tithing becomes easy. Lets give our tithes for the glory of God.

It is so true about tithing, in fact my wife and I have not only give 10% to God, but we also give an additional 5% as our first fruits to God. As a result I have always been blessed by God. What I have learn that it is my obedience to God that brings the blessing as well as Faith.

Thank you sooo much for this! I’m going through a tough financial time right now. Unemployment ran out 6 months ago, undiagnosed illness, surgery to repair a previous surgery, husband out of work due to neck problems that he has to have surgery on next month, and his disability hasn’t gone through yet. All scary and tough things. I know that God is my supplier, but I’m only human and kind find myself freaking out, then God reminds me who He is! Thank you for the scripture!!! God bless
